Ohio & Erie Canal
One major reason Northeast Ohio became an industrial center was the building of the Ohio Erie Canal. The first section of the canal opened from Akron to Cleveland.
Akron Ohio became known as the oatmeal capital of the world long before it became the rubber capital because this is where farmers could bring their harvested crops. The crops could be ground at the mills in Akron, and from there they could be shipped using the Ohio & Erie Canal to Cleveland and the rest of the world.

Canals in Ohio, but especially in Northeast Ohio, played a pivotal role in the development, especially industrial development. Industry attracted people looking for work.
Today, the canals are visitor attractions that draws people not only from their surrounding communities, but also attract visitors from around the world that have a keen interest in America's canal systems.
Paul Brown: An Ohio Football Legend
Football for many was born in Northeast Ohio. This is where Paul Brown got his start. In 1932 he coached his high school alma mater, Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. Over eight seasons, Brown posted a record of eighty victories, eight losses, and two ties. He only lost one game at Washington High School after the 1935 season. Brown went on to be the first coach of the Cleveland Browns. His career with Cleveland was 167 wins, 53 losses, and 8 ties. He won 3 National Football League titles. Brown remained as the team’s head coach until 1962, when a new owner, Arthur B. Modell, fired Brown. Brown then went on to create the Cincinnati Bengals.

There is a statue of Paul Brown outside Washington HS Stadium in honor of this Ohio Football Legend.

Not far from Washington HS, in Canton, is the Football Hall of Fame. No football enthusiast should miss seeing this.
