Ohio's Major Regions

We have divided the state into 5 geographic regions to help organize featured attractions to those particular areas. Each region has its own unique features and attractions.

Ohio also has several magnificent natural playgrounds: North Coast of Lake Erie and the Hocking Hills. Another unique cultural area is Ohio's Amish Country, where visitors can see a distinctly different way of life and plenty of unique shopping opportunities.

Visiting Ohio's Capitol Building

When it was first built, the Ohio Statehouse was the largest capitol building in the country. Couples on their honeymoon would come to the statehouse and make the steep climb to the cupola and sign their names on the windowed walls. When the building first opened there were just 55 rooms, but over time that number grew to over 700 different offices. In the 1990s a massive restoration of the Capitol was undertaken to restore the Capitol to its original splendor. The Ohio Statehouse is open everyday for visitors to see this quality Greek Revival building, and on special occasions, you can actually take a tour of the statehouse and see the cornerstone and climb those steps up to the cupola and see all those signatures from years past. Every year, more than 400,000 visitors come to the Ohio Statehouse.

Ohio History

OHIO HISTORY is the history of a young country struggling to adapt to its new independence. Although Ohio became a state in 1803, its history goes back over 2000 years ago, when the great Adena and Hopewell Cultures had massive cities throughout the Ohio Country. Although these ancient people were long gone before the first Native Americans migrated into Ohio's beautiful land, their culture can still be found in many locations throughout the state. You can read and see more about Ohio's Ancient Cultures, see their preserved artifacts and many of the remaining earthworks and burial mounds.

Ohio became a great state because it embraced new technology as it became viable. First were the great canals that connected Ohio with the rest of the nation and the world. As innovations such as the railroad, Ohio developed one of the most extensive railroad systems in the country. While many of those transport modes have been surpassed, their position in our history can not be ignored. Today there are numerous locations throughout the state where these pioneering transport systems still exist.

The great conflict between the states was strongly felt in Ohio. Touring OhioWelcome to the Heart of America: Ohio

There's a phrase Ohioans display on their license plates: "Ohio: the heart of it all". I never liked that phrase too much because it didn't really say anything. The phrasing was cute, but I never knew what "it" was.

I thought a better slogan should be: "Ohio: the Heart of America!" Now that says something!

Ohio really is the heart of America, even the shape of the state looks like a heart. Ok, that might be stretching things, but Ohio is central in relation to the rest of the country. We are the cross-roads of the nation. And, at the heart of Ohio is the state capital: Columbus— the epitome of a cross-roads town.

Ohio was once known world-wide for its innovators and industry. With the world economy today, many of those industrial giants are moving away, but the innovators and workers are still going strong. Columbus was recently selected as the top city in the country for technology development.

With a solid work ethic and strong family values based on its rich religious heritage, Ohio is a great place to put down roots, or to just take some vacation time digging into our nation's history and the rural heritage that made America great. In Ohio, you can still feel the heartbeat of the American Spirit.
